Photo Savers / Story Keepers
Everything
you need to know to successfully organize and preserve your family
photographs. Starting with the how to keep and moving on to what to
keep. Participants also learn a simple method for writing down
memories so they will never be lost or forgotten. For more information about Photo Savers / Story Keepers, visit the official webpage. Preserving Digital Photographs: Don't get caught with Digital Amnesia
Did you know that CDs can fail in as little as five years? And that
you're probably protecting the wrong side from scratches? How about the
fact that Microsoft is planning to introduce a file format that may render
JPEG obsolete?
Join archivist Sally Jacobs for practical advice on how
to ensure your "born digital" photos will be around for future
generations to enjoy. She'll also point out the most common blunders
people make when they scan photographs, and share tips on how you can
avoid them.
Preservation 101: Save Your Photos!
This class will teach you about
the physical, chemical, and biological factors that are damaging your
pictures. You'll also learn how to preserve photographs, negatives, and
digital files using simple techniques that every archivist knows.
Choose between two hands-on projects:
1)
Bring in a treasured photograph (no larger than 4x6 inches) that you
love to show off. Protect it from heavy handling using an entirely
reversible process called encapsulation. Great for safely displaying
vintage photographs in scrapbooks too.
2) If your photographs are stored in sticky "magnetic" albums, they are in dire need of rescuing. Learn how to safely remove them using tools you can bring home with you! Three archival quality envelopes are included for storing loose photographs. You are encouraged to bring your photo album.
Photo Memories Writing Workshop
Everybody has a story to tell. Isn't it time to write yours? Lose
your fear of writing in our supportive workshop environment. First,
learn a simple method for organizing your memories so the details will
NEVER be lost to time. Then, learn how to write brief but compelling
essays about your treasured photographs.
Whether you are thinking about
writing your life story but have no idea where to begin -- or you are
a scrapbooker who is sick of using cliches in your journaling -- this course is for
you!
Bring a photo album or five individual photographs with you to
class. Pictures can be recent or historical.
