Which one is going to last longer:
A black & white photograph, or a scanned copy burned onto a CD?

The answer might surprise you...

Every archivist knows that the original photograph has a much better chance of long-term survival. It's not only about how long the CD itself will last (and whether or not it gets scratched) but also a question of future software and hardware compatability. Click here to read
a concise yet eloquent explanation of the problem brought to you by the Long Now Foundation.

So why oh why do we offer digital services?

1. Peace of mind....even if disaster strikes.

One of our satisfied customers had this to say:

Dear Sally,

Now that you are rapidly approaching the end of the project of scanning years and years of my family photos and transferring the data to disks, I can now be confident that regardless of what may happen to the original photos, Nancy and I will always be able to have these priceless treasures easily recreated.

Each year I dutifully purchase casualty insurance on my home and car without giving it much thought while the most precious treasures that I own, my family photos, were until now at risk of being lost forever. I consider the cost and time spent is easily worth while.

Thanks for making this a fun and easy project!

Many people have asked me lately if there's any way to protect their beloved collections from tornados, hurricanes, fire and floods. There's really only one way to avoid a total loss -- and that's to create extra copies and store them in a different location. A safe deposit box, your office and the homes of distant relatives are all excellent choices.

You could print out a second set of hard copies, but digital files take up much less space. Your Aunt Rita, for example, might be willing to store a small box of CDs for you, but it's not very likely she'll be happy about boxes and boxes of your photographs cluttering up her house. Besides, just think of how much that would cost!

2. Digital restoration of damaged photographs.

You won't believe what our Photoshop experts can do. Faded photographs, torn or damaged photographs...all of these can be brought back to life digitally. If you want the restored image to last as long as possible your best bet is to have a trusted local photo store print out another hard copy. Ink jet prints vary widely when it comes to fading and long term survival.

3. Share and enjoy your collection.

There's not much point in putting time and money into organizing and properly storing items if no one ever takes a look at them.

Think about it this way: Chances are you love emailing digital photos to family and friends. But what about photographs from the days before you had a digital camera? You know the photos I'm talking about...

Your parents' wedding portrait. Baby pictures of you and your siblings. Car trips you took in your first car. That shot of your sister's disasterous home perm. (Hey, wait a minute! Now that you're thinking about it, you could create a entire website based solely on your sister's worst hairstyles over the past half century...)

Don't have the right equipment?
Don’t have the time or patience to do
lots of scanning yourself?

We can help.

4. Once your photos are digital, we can create a heartwarming experience that's easy to enjoy with a whole roomfull of people at the same time.
